Data Analysis

 

We use data to describe the world and answer important questions. In this unit we will begin to understand the reasons for collecting data, different ways to display it, and what important information data can provide for us.

 

Understandings, Skills and Guiding Questions

Students will understand that …

  • Visual displays of data can be constructed in a variety of formats to solve problems.

Guiding questions:

  • What are the ways data can be displayed?

  • What can data tell you about the people you survey?

  • What makes a good survey question?

  • Why do we collect data?

Students will be skilled at:

  • constructing a line plot.

  • drawing a picture graph to represent a data set with up to four categories.

  • drawing a bar graph to represent a data set with up to four categories.

  • solving simple put together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

 

Real Life Application

People use data to describe the world and answer questions such as

how many classmates are buying lunch today, how much it rained yesterday, or in which month are the most birthdays.

Why not sort and classify your weekly grocery shopping with your young learner!

Discuss different ways you could do this eg by types of packaging used, food types or even with fruit and vegetables between leaf, root and seed based vegetables.

You could also classify them according what continents or countries they have come from.

This can provide a valuable home based context linking our numeracy learning with our Sustainable Food Production Unit.
